Let’s Talk About Macro Shots

I used to photograph macro shots regularly—tiny fingers, wrinkly toes, unique belly buttons and little lips. I loved creating those images. But over time, I noticed something: clients almost never chose those macro shots in their final galleries.

So naturally, I started taking fewer of them.

Not because they weren’t beautiful, but because they didn’t seem to be what people wanted most, in the moment.

I have been seeing macro shots popping up everywhere and I find myself falling back in love with those tiny details all over again.

The Expressions That Happen When You’re Not Looking

Newborn expressions are quiet and subtle. A half-smile in their sleep. A tiny stretch. That serious little face they make for no reason at all. You can’t plan these moments—they just happen, and they’re gone before you even realize it.

When I give babies time to settle and just be, those expressions start to show up naturally. And honestly? Those are often the images that feel the most real to me.

About Those Macro Shots…

Even though macros weren’t always selected, they’re often the images parents tell me they wish they had more of later on.

Because once the newborn phase passes, it really passes.
The wrinkles smooth out.
The hands don’t curl the same way.
They don’t feel quite so tiny in your arms anymore.

And suddenly, those macro shots feel priceless.

So Let Me Ask You This

As you think about your newborn session, I want you to ask yourself:

  • Do you want macro shots included in your newborn session?
  • Are these tiny details something you’ll want to remember years from now?
  • When your baby is bigger, will you want to look back and see just how small they once were?

There’s no right answer here—just what feels important to you and your family.

Photographing With Intention

At Jen Isackson Photography, my goal is always to tell the full story of your baby’s earliest days. That includes beautiful portraits, sweet expressions, and intentional macro shots that capture the details so easy to forget.

Macro shots might not always feel like the most exciting images right now. But over time, they often become some of the most meaningful.

And that’s why I’m choosing to offer them again, at your newborn session.

If you’re expecting and want to talk through what matters most to you during your newborn session, I’d love to create something that feels true to your story.

Send me a message through my contact form.  I can’t wait to create your forever memories.
